Ladies, it’s time to play!

Sedruola Maruska | Personal Development Coach

When was the last time you took time to play?

I’m a mom of two, a wife, a business builder with aging parents and cancer. I know how hectic and overwhelming life can get. I also know that taking time to play is mandatory.

Did you know that play actually makes you more intelligent? It does! According to this interview with Dr. Martin Korte play promotes brain development by creating new synapses. According to my daughter it “makes more wrinkles in your brain.”

Basically, when we stop playing, our brains don’t work as well or as hard. That means, we find tasks more challenging, and frustrating. Could it lead to burnout? I’d say yes, but I’m no scientist.

People who keep playing throughout their life will continue to feel the benefit, because play always means thinking things over, learning something new, concentrating on something.

Why you should play

In the last eight months I’ve thought about and done more play than I have in many years. Why? Because keeping a positive state of mind, being able to enjoy life and self-care depend on it.

Building a business that asks women to slow down, take leisure time so they can be more productive means I too need to do the same. Believe me, I have. It’s the reason I decided to make leisure (play) my platform.

We all live in a constant state of stress which can overproduce the hormone Cortisol. Which can lead to a weakened immune system, or high blood pressure. I’m not trying to scare you, but these things are serious.

Most of the time we’re stressed about things that could easily be let go. But we’re so focused on looking or acting a certain way we make ourselves sick. . . literally.

So, it’s time to play.

Epic water balloon and water gun fight, white water rafting, parasailing are all new items that have been added to my bucket list. Along with those are games with my family, more parties and quality time with friends.

Let’s create a synapse revolution! Let’s lower our cortisol levels to normal, boost our dopamine, build our immunity and lower our blood pressure.

In the end, it’s the fun we’ve had along the way to making an impact that we’ll truly remember and cherish.

It’s time to play!

Don’t be a hot flash

Sedruola Maruskaj Blog

I know with a title like “Don’t be a hot flash” I could go almost anywhere, but I won’t.

We women of a certain age go through a life change that causes us to have hot flashes.

If you’ve never experienced a hot flash let me see if I explain it to you.

Imagine, for a minute that you’re sitting in a comfortable room enjoying a meal. All of a sudden you begin to feel heat rising as if someone turned a burner on under your seat. You look around and everyone else still looks comfortable, but you’re feeling the sweat burst from you skin, in places you didn’t think you had sweat glands, as if it can’t get to it’s task fast enough. . . that’s a hot flash.

Hot flashes come at different intervals and stay for different spans of time. They’re intense and then they’re gone.

So, don’t be someone who’s intense & excited about making a change, only to fade just as quickly.

Being like a hot flash is a sure way to experience routine failure.

Instead, decide, focus do and stick with it until it works, or until you KNOW it won’t work. Then, maybe, what you need to do is simply change your approach and try again.

This goes for anything you’re working on doing in life. Do you want to be less busy and more calm? Do the work. Would you like to build a business so you can ditch your day job? Do the work. Would you like to gain weight? Lose weight? Feel better in your clothes? Enjoy more fun times? Do the work.

Sleep: The Secret to Increased Productivity

Everything comes with some work involved. We had an amazingly fun wedding, but months of planning and working on the details went into it.

Create, commit and stick to a plan and you’ll enjoy more productivity and more fun!

Don’t be like a hot flash, be like an ember with a steady heat that may cool over time, but only if the conditions aren’t right to stick around.

Courage is a choice

I recently watched “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and found it quite entertaining. Not incredibly intellectual, but I found myself laughing out loud at times and cringing at others. I was entertained, sometimes that’s all you need. . . but I digress.

In the movie there’s a character, Frankie, played by the very talented Justice Smith, who lives in fear. His problem, his position, what he’s passionate about is taking him to very scary places and he’s constantly engulfed by his fear.

The best part is when he has to make a choice between his fear and courage to save someone he cares about. As per Hollywood, he chooses courage.

Notice how I said he “chooses” courage.

So many times we think we’re victims of circumstance. Something scary comes along and we don’t believe we have what it takes to tackle that thing. So we choose fear. We choose to play small. Or, we choose not to venture.

Courage, choosing to be scared but to do the thing anyway, is a choice.

I got cancer. I had no choice there. Choice came when it was time to decide whether I was going to choose courage or fear. The choice comes whenever I decide how to talk about, think about, or tackle the changes that have come with cancer.
I choose courage every day.

What we choose each moment of our lives, alters everything that comes after that moment. Sometimes, an act of courage may be to get out of bed in the morning, or to go back to school for what you really want to do. Sometimes, it’s simply smiling at a stranger who looks sad.

Courage, when chosen, is always grand no matter how small the act.

What’s your “Thing”? What are you putting off, shying away from or just ignoring because you don’t believe you have what it takes to do it? You do have what it takes, it takes courage, just choose to use it.

Courage is not exclusive, it’s what those who achieve their dreams choose everyday because going for what you want is scary. . . but you have the choice to work through your fear.
